"The Ballad of Buckley Mae" 48x40 oil on canvas. Named for one of the famous Buckley family cowgirls hailing from Montanan at the turn of the century. While their father was busy with their North Dakota farm, the sisters were given the responsibility of running the horse and cattle operation in Montana. Proficient at roping, riding, breaking broncs, and branding calves, their skills were comparable to Montana's best cowboys. Respected by their male counterparts, they earned the nickname "Red Yearlings" because fo their strawberry blonde hair and expertise as horsewomen. Often asked to compete in rodeos they declined because fo their serious focus on ranching.
